Cool little thing, it looks like it should have come
from one of the Czechs, endemic to the limestones of

John from H&H brought us this cool Japanese Sanguisorba (which was supposed to be purple but it is only
purple early in the season). I haven’t seen him in a while (new baby and all)
but I expect the next time he shows up he will be wearing a think geek “ no I will not fix your computer tee shirt”. It is not like
we take advantage of him or anything, I even gave him my ferret eaten cordless
mouse; he must have liked it because they named the baby after the ferret,
(don’t believe that stuff about old family names) but I digress buy the Sanguisorba if we run out I can always try to beg more.
Santolina chamaecyparissus 'Foxden'

Silene acaulis, pink flowers
on short stems, a favorite of mine.
Saponaria lutea .................. PRICE 1@ $6.50
Yellow is a rare color in Saponaria,
and this is a fairly nice alpine species, it would seem to have a lot of
potential for plant breeding, a good yellow ocymoides
or pulvinaris would be most welcome.
Saponaria ocymoides ...... PRICE 1@ $6.50
Flat mats to several feet
across, this does not root down as it creeps, making it easy to lift up and
trim back the cushion.
Saponaria officianalis .. PRICE
1@ $6.50
Bouncing Bet, I’m guessing

Saponaria pulvinaris 'Red Select' PRICE
1@ $6.50
Grassy leaved dense tufts
of foliage, and large deep pink flowers on short stems, horribly confused with pumilio in gardens, these came from Euroseed

mat smothered in deep pinkish red flowers, it is one
of the most commented on cushions in our tufa beds.
Saponaria pulvinaris 'Light Pink' PRICE

A light pink flowered
clone we selected from the same seedlot.
Saponaria sp ex

Saururus
cernuus ............ PRICE 1@ $6.50
Our native Lizard’s Tail is one of only two members of
the Saururacaea, the other Asian counterpart being
listed in the perennial section, this moisture loving perennial can reach 1.25m
in height topped by 30cm long inflorescences that taper like a fragrant white lizards tail. If you don’t already grow it, buy some and get
them planted immediately, don’t tempt fate and piss off the lizard god, his
wrath should be avoided at all costs, he’s already licking his eyeballs at the
prospect of new victims.
Saururus chinensis ....... PRICE 1@ $15.00
The Asian counterpart of our native Lizard’s Tail with
spikes of ivory flowers, collecting Asian versions of American natives has
become popular of late, (collectors often hold meetings and chant ‘Reunite
Gondwanaland’ while shooting into the air with AK-47’s). However, I digress, taxonomically the two are separated by the position
of the anthers in chinensis they are held below the
stigmas, in cernuus they are held above.
Saxifraga
You will notice a
dearth of saxes this year, most of them took a beating
this summer and we decided to pull most everything and start over with new
cuttings, also we have pretty well saturated the market, if you didn’t get any
in the last few years you are s.o.l.
Saxifraga aspera ............... PRICE
1@ $6.50
A white flowering European
species in the Trachyphyllum Section, it’s native to
the Pyrenees and Alps at altitudes from 1500-2000m. it
does not like to dry out but still wants sharp drainage, quite easy compared to
some of the others we offer.

Saxifraga longifolia ...... PRICE
1@ $6.50
The ultimate silver (florulenta

rosettes that can reach dinner plate size, then they send up a huge spray of
flowers and die without offsets; from the
Saxifraga pan. minutifolia 'Red backed spider'
PRICE
1@ $6.50
It will ensnare you with its charm,
however it's quite safe and well behaved, unlike its Australian namesake. Punnett selected this as a chance seedling out of a batch
of minutifolia, for the good red color on the
undersides of the leaves.
Saxifraga pentadactylus ssp willkommii PRICE
1@ $6.50
A fairly rare little mossy sax, from 1800m in Spain, Mojmir found these in the Sierra Cantabrica
on limestone, ssp willkommii
is apparently a lime lover with more compact cushions of aromatic foliage then
the straight species, flowers are white in panicles of 5-30 which are produced
in the typical mossy fashion.
Saxifraga trifurcata variegata PRICE
1@ $6.50
A nicely variegated form with very thready
leaves and an open habit, I think Betty Blake originally gave it to me, the
name and details are long forgotten but the plant remains; one of the few mossies that we have kept over the years.
Saxifraga x andrewsii .... PRICE
1@ $6.50
A hybrid between S. paniculata and S. spathularis, it
is an attractive easy silver, and grown widely in French cemeteries.
